In 1990, Cheryl moved to Peoria, Illinois, to work as a reporter at WMBD-TV. Later, from 1990 to 1992, she worked at KWCH-DT in Wichita, Kansas.

In 1992, Cheryl joined WLS-TV in Chicago as a weekend co-anchor and reporter. In 2003, she was promoted to co-anchor the 5 p.m. weekday newscast and contribute to the 10 p.m. newscast. Cheryl also anchored the 7 p.m. show on WCIU-TV until it was discontinued in 2019. Since June 2018, Cheryl has anchored the 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts on WLS-TV alongside Alan Krashesky and Rob Elgas, as well as the digital 6:30 p.m. newscast.
